Stardust

Last night I slept, dreamt of a wolf La nuit dernière, j'ai rêvé d'un loup
Dark grey and black, all fangs and claws Gris sombre et noir, tout crocs et griffes
Wise burning eyes staring at me; Ses yeux brûlants et sages me fixant;
Panic stricken, I would not move. Paniqué, je ne pouvais plus bouger.

Wolf talked to me, told me a tale Loup m'a parlé, m'a conté une histoire
Of crystal shards clear as the air. D'éclats de cristal transparents comme l'air.
I listened hard, felt mesmerized J'écoutais attentivement, hypnotisé
His words going right to my soul: Ses mots allant droit à mon âme:

"In ancient times, when life was young "En d'anciens temps, quand la vie était jeune
There lived a man of utter good. Vécut un homme de grande bonté
He dwelled alone in small a hut Il vivait seul, dans une petite hutte
standing close to a water spring Se trouvant près d'une source

Now it happened, that tired of life Il advint que fatigué de vivre
He decided to leave this world. Il décida de quitter ce monde.
Still he would not forget the sound Mais il ne pouvait oublier les sons
Of the forest, and of the spring. De la forêt et de la source.

With all his might, with all his will De toutes ses forces, de toute sa volonté
He shaped the water of the spring Il sculpta l'eau de la source
Into a tree made of crystal En un arbre fait de cristal
And into it, poured out his soul. Dans lequel il déversa son âme.

Hundred years passed, and the tree stood Cent ans passèrent, et l'arbre vécut
Shading the beasts, welcoming birds Ombrageant les bêtes, accueillant les oiseaux
Blooming flowers as came springtime Couvert de fleurs quant venait le printemps
Sparkling light in wintertime. Etincelant de lumière durant l'hiver.

Then came the men, dripping with greed Puis vinrent les hommes, ivres de cupidité
They saw the tree, and held their breath Ils virent l'arbre, retinrent leur souffle
Of the beauty they saw nothing De la beauté ils ne virent rien
Wishing only for yellow gold. Ne souhaitant que de l'or jaune.

Ugly axes struck viciously D'horribles haches frappèrent méchament
Seeking the life of the old tree. Cherchant la vie du vieil arbre.
Unable to protect itself Incapable de se protéger
The tree felt life deserting him. L'arbre sentit s'échaper sa vie.

In great fury, inside the tree En grande fureur, à l'intérieur de l'arbre
The soul gathered its last power L'âme rassembla ses dernières forces
And suddenly, in hot anger Et soudainement, brûlant de colère
Released its might upon the men. Libéra sa puissance contre les hommes.

Crystal shattered, tree exploded Le cristal se brisa, l'arbre explosa
Hurling hundreds of deadly shards. Projetant des milliers d'éclats mortels.
All the men died, screaming in pain. Tous les hommes périrent, hurlant de douleur.
Without shelter, the soul dissolved. Sans protection, l'âme se dissout.

Of the great tree, remained nothing Du grand arbre il ne resta rien
But little shards sharp as a blade. Que des éclats afûtés comme une lame.
A few of them, soaked with red blood Certains d'entre-eux, tachés de sang
Turned to dark red, there on the ground." Devinrent rouge sombre, là sur le sol."

The time has passed, I looked for them, Le temps à passé, je les ai cherché,
And found a shard, clear as water. J'ai trouvé un éclat, pur comme l'eau.
Delicately, I picked it up Délicatement, je l'ai ramassé
And cleaned the dirt hiding the light. Et nettoyé la poussière cachant la lumière.

The shard glowed bright, I came to you L'éclat brillait, je vins à toi
I held the gift, it bit my flesh Offrant mon cadeau, il mordit ma chair
You took the shard, with it my heart Tu pris l'éclat, avec lui mon coeur
Threw them away, and stamped them both. Tu les jeta, et les piétina.

Now I stand here, watching the ground Maintenant je suis là, regardant le sol
I lost my heart, and I lost you J'ai perdu mon coeur, et je t'ai perdue
You crushed my heart, you crushed the shard, Tu a écrasé mon coeur, tu as écrasé l'éclat,
Leaving me with some bright stardust. Me laissant avec une étincelante poussière d'étoile.
